Beneficial Procedures for Aging Skin

By Stina Delance

Skin will have a more bright and youthful look when people take steps to improve their overall health. All of us are subject to the effects of aging, although we can make these effects less prevalent when we apply proper care to ourselves. A healthy and active lifestyle should be a given, and in addition to this, treatments such as Photofacial, Botox, and chemical peels and facelifts can make the skin look more youthful. Before a cosmetic treatment, appropriate skin care is very important, and of course during the procedure, and immediately following it.

It is well known that the best way for a person to reduce aging of the skin is to avoid excessive exposure to the sun. The majority of damage that we receive to our skin is from UV or ultraviolet rays from tanning salons or the sun, and this ages the skin much more quickly. Sunscreen is important to apply to the skin because we may not notice the damage that the sun does to our skin, as it accumulates over time slowly.

Hydrated skin looks healthier and younger. Often the best daily approach is to use a good facial moisturizer to help hydrate the outer layers of the skin.

The way we eat shows up in our skin. Omega 6 and omega 3 essential fatty acids are important for your skin in particular. Flax seed oil is a good source of this, as well as other foods like fish or walnuts. However, there is no need to do this in excess and your current diet probably contains all of the essential oils your skin needs. Whenever possible, opt for whole wheat grains over "white" breads. Try to choose non-saturated fat products and low-fat dairy, as well as consuming lots of fruits and vegetables. Follow the recommendations of your dietitian or doctor, and use good judgment. Improving the way you eat will help you feel good and protect your skin from rapid aging.

The damage we receive in our skin is repaired by the natural enzymes within it. Aging skin can not be completely stopped, but these enzymes repair the daily damage we take. Cigarettes contains dangerous free radicals and toxins that destroy these enzymes that work to repair our skin, and smoke products also destroy elastin and collagen, which keeps our skin young and healthy. If you are a smoker, remember that every time you smoke you are speeding up the aging process in your skin. Smokers would be well advised to try to quit. The accelerated aging of the skin will be slowed down, and the other dangers that are associated with smoking will be avoided.

Most of us get some form of acne, but for some it's a bigger problem. Scars sometimes remain after bad acne, and none of us appreciate their unsightly appearance. To help reduce acne and the effects that it leaves, it's a good idea to visit a dermatologist. Younger looking skin can be maintained longer when the scars from acne are not allowed to develop in the first place. A physician will work with a patient to find the acne treatment that will benefit them the most. And a cosmetic surgeon may be able to help you with a chemical peel to treat acne if you are a good candidate for this safe procedure.
